Career

Stewart made his Broadway debut in 1932 with the drama “Carry Nation.” Soon after, he had a small but well-received role in the comedic play “Goodbye Again.”

Stewart later appeared in plays such as “Spring in Autumn,” “All Good Americans,” “Yellow Jack,” “Divided by Three,” and “Page Miss Glory.”

Stewart made his film debut in 1935, after signing a seven-year contract with MGM, with a small part in Spencer Tracy’s “The Murder Man.”

The following year, he had another tiny part in the smash musical “Rose Marie,” as well as larger roles in films such as “Next Time We Love,” “Small Town Girl,” “Speed,” “Born to Dance,” and “After the Thin Man.”

Stewart appeared in the remake of Frank Borzage’s “Seventh Heaven” in 1937, as well as the critically acclaimed drama “Navy Blue and Gold.”

In 1938, he found new success with George Stevens’ “Vivacious Lady” and Frank Capra’s “You Can’t Take It With You.” Stewart became a great Hollywood celebrity after the latter, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Stewart returned to the screen in what is undoubtedly his most iconic role: George Bailey in Frank Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

Despite its modest commercial success at the time, the picture received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Actor for Stewart.

Personal Life and Death

Stewart was a Hollywood playboy with fellow actor and old friend and roommate Henry Fonda. He dated actresses such as Ginger Rogers, Norma Shearer, Loretta Young, Marlene Dietrich, and Olivia de Havilland.

Stewart was set to marry singer Dinah Shore in 1943 but backed out owing to cold feet.

He began dating actress Myrna Dell after the war. In 1949, Stewart married his first wife, actress and former model Gloria Hatrick.

He adopted her past marriage’s two sons, Ronald and Michael, and produced twin girls with her, Judy and Kelly. They remained together until Hatrick’s death in 1994.

Stewart became increasingly reclusive after the loss of his wife. He was hospitalized twice, once in late 1995 and once in early 1997.

Stewart died in July of this year, at the age of 89, after a pulmonary embolism that led to a heart attack at his Beverly Hills home.
